Privacy Policy
Quod Erat Ludendum (“QEL,” “we”) is a math game jam operated by the Ross Mathematics Foundation. This policy explains what data we collect, why, and what we do with it. We keep it short because we collect very little.
What we collect
- GitHub account data. When you sign in with GitHub, we receive and store your GitHub numeric ID, login (username), display name, avatar URL, account creation date, and (if you’ve made it public on GitHub or shared it during sign-in) your email address.
- Birth year. We ask for the year you were born — year only, not full date — to confirm you are at least 13, as required by the U.S. Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
- Content you submit. Game entries, descriptions, screenshots, cover art, video links, ratings you give to other games, and any moderation notes.
- Session cookies. A single first-party cookie that keeps you signed in. No advertising cookies.
- Server logs. Standard web-server access logs (IP address, timestamp, requested URL) kept for a short period for security and debugging.
- Analytics data. We use Google Analytics 4 to understand aggregate site usage — pages
viewed, referrer, browser, approximate location derived from IP. Google Analytics sets its own
cookies (typically
_ga) to distinguish visitors. See the “Third parties” section below for how to opt out.
Why we collect it
- To let you sign in and identify your submissions and ratings.
- To enforce the 13+ age requirement and the vote-integrity rule that GitHub accounts must be at least 30 days old before their ratings count.
- To display submitted games and tally votes.
- To operate the site and prevent abuse.
Third parties
- GitHub handles the actual sign-in flow. See GitHub’s privacy policy for what they do with your data.
- Amazon Web Services (S3) stores uploaded media (screenshots, cover art). Media URLs are public.
- Amazon Web Services (SES) sends transactional email such as submission and moderation notifications, if we email you at all.
- Google Analytics receives page-view and browser data as described above. You can opt out site-wide by installing Google’s Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on, or by enabling your browser’s tracking-protection features.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers.
Public information
Anything you publish as part of a game submission — title, description, screenshots, video, your GitHub login as author — is public. Ratings you give are stored per user but shown only in aggregate.
Retention
We keep your account data as long as your account exists. Session cookies expire automatically. If you ask us to delete your account, we will remove your profile and ratings; submitted games may be retained (with authorship reassigned to a generic label) if removing them would break the historical record of a completed jam. Email us to request deletion.
Children under 13
QEL is not intended for children under 13. If you are under 13, please do not create an account. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us data, email us and we will delete it.
Your rights
You can ask us to see, correct, or delete the data we hold about you. Email ross@rossprogram.org.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes we will post the updated policy here with a new effective date. Continued use of the site after changes take effect means you accept the new policy.
